SYMPTOMS

When you try to delete a shared fax printer on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 2000 professional client computer, you may receive the following error message:
Printer connection cannot be removed. You either entered a printer name that was incorrect or the specified printer is no longer connected to the server. Click help for more information.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you rename or delete the shared fax printer on the Small Business Server computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, make sure that the client printer is either mapped to the new name of the shared fax printer on the server, or not mapped at all if the shared fax printer has been removed from the server. After you make the appropriate changes on the client computer's shared fax printer, you can delete it.

To change the shared fax printer on the client computer so that you can delete it, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click the printer icon, click Properties, click the Sharing tab, click Shared as, and then type the name of the shared fax printer to match the new name of the printer on the server.NOTE: If there is not a shared fax printer on the server, select the Not shared option.
Note: If you cannot open the properties of the shared fax printer that you are trying to delete on the client computer, you have to install a temporary printer on the client so that you can remove the shared fax printer.

To add a new printer on the client computer, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Double-click Add Printer.
  3. Click Next, click Local Printer, and then click Next again.
  4. Click "Use the following port:" and "FILE: Print to File", and then click Next.
  5. Click Generic as the manufacturer, click Generic / Text Only as the printer, then click Next.
  6. Continue with the wizard by accepting all the defaults. You do not have to print a test page. You may be prompted for the Windows 2000 Server media that can be found on Small Business Server 2000 CD 1.
  7. After you install a new printer on the client, you can delete the shared fax printer from the client. After you successfully delete the shared fax printer, you can then delete the newly added printer.
To delete the shared fax printer on the client computer, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click the printer that you want to delete, and then click Delete.
