SMS: The Administrator Console May Not Connect If the Provider Runs on Windows Server 2003 (326881)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q326881

SYMPTOMS

If the Systems Management Server (SMS) provider is located on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Release Candidate 1 (build 3663), you may not be able to connect successfully with the SMS Administrator console.

Note that you may have been able to connect successfully in the past, but it stops working.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) repository is corrupted. For example, this problem may occur if you use the Show count command on collections in the SMS Administrator console. After you use the Show count command, the SMS Administrator console may not work.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to Windows Server 2003-based computers that serve the SMS Provider role.

To resolve this problem, contact your Windows Server 2003 JDP Program Manager for information about how to obtain the hotfix.

NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
