SYMPTOMS

Non-Internet shortcut files that are located in a user's Favorites folder may be deleted.

CAUSE

The Windows Internet Explorer\Favorites and Links Group Policy setting that is used to deploy administrative Internet shortcuts to clients deletes non-Internet files if the policy is assigned to users.

Internet Explorer stores Internet shortcut files as .url files. Shortcuts to documents or other files are stored as .lnk files. If the Internet Explorer\Favorites and Links Group Policy setting is applied, it deletes all files that are not .url files in the Favorites folder.
