XADM: How to Use Mailbox Manager When the Recipient Update Service Is Turned Off (325516)

Warning If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.
To create a Mailbox Manager recipient policy, follow these steps:

1. Create a Mailbox Manager recipient policy, and then save the policy. This policy does not need a filter because the Recipient Update Service is turned off.
2. Start the ADSI Edit snap-in from Microsoft Windows 2000 Support Tools.
3. Expand the configuration naming context, expand Services, expand Microsoft Exchange, expand Your Organization (where Your Organization is the name of your Exchange 2000 organization), and then expand Recipient Policies.
4. Right-click the Mailbox Manager recipient policy that you created in step 1, and then click Properties.
5. In the Select a property to view box, click objectGUID.

7. Collapse the configuration naming context, expand the domain naming context, and then locate a user to include in the Mailbox Manager recipient policy.
8. Right-click the user, and then click Properties.
9. In the Select a property to view box, click msExchPoliciesIncluded.
10. In the Edit Attribute box, type {objectGUID},{3B6813EC-CE89-42BA-9442-D87D4AA30DBC}, where objectGUID is the GUID of the Mailbox Manager recipient policy that you noted in step 6.
    
    Note Make sure to include the braces ({}).
11. Click Add, and then click OK.

This change takes effect after the change has been replicated to your domain controllers. You can also configure this change for multiple users at the same time by using a custom Active Directory script or application. Mailbox Manager runs on a per-server basis and its schedule must be set on a per-server basis on the properties of the server object in Exchange System Manager. When Mailbox Manager runs on a specific server, it queries the Active Directory directory service for each user on the server, and then looks at each user's msExchPoliciesIncluded attribute to see which Mailbox Manager policy to use on that mailbox. It identifies the Mailbox Manager policy by the 3B6813EC-CE89-42BA-9442-D87D4AA30DBC value that is present. Specific Mailbox Manager settings are not stored on the user object; only the Mailbox Manager recipient policy that has been applied to the user is stored.
