This article was previously published under Q323764

SYMPTOMS

When you install an audio driver on Windows 2000, you may be prompted to reboot the computer to complete the installation process.

CAUSE

This can occur because of a bug in the setup code that causes the code to try to copy over files that the system marks as "in use," even though those files do not have to be recopied. In the case of audio, this can occur with the Wdmaud.drv file. When this occurs, the Setup Wizard prompts you to reboot the system. You must reboot to complete the installation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Windows XP.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue is not necessarily specific to audio drivers and may affect any installation where the files to be copied are in use, even if they do not have to be copied.

If you enable SetupAPI logging, you see messages in the SetupAPI.log file that indicate that a file could not be copied because it was in use.
