CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 files become corrupted during extraction from the Service Pack 2 archive file.

When you extract the Service Pack 2 files for Exchange 2000, there are supposed to be 9,156 files stored in the Server folder, and 8,901 files stored in the i386 folder.

NOTE: This is the i386 folder that is created when you extract the Service Pack 2 files.

If the number of files stored in these folders is different from 9,156 in the Server folder, or 8,901 in the i386 folder, the Service Pack 2 extraction may be corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the files and folders that you extracted from the Service Pack 2 archive file, and then download and extract a new copy of Service Pack 2 for Exchange 2000 Server. Reapply the service pack.
