256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SUMMARY

This article describes the Volume Preference setting that Word uses to gain access to files on a network drive, and how you can make Word retain file path information.

MORE INFORMATION

You can configure Microsoft Word to retain file path information when you work with files on a network server, either as a mapped drive (Z:\Folder_Name\File_Name) or as Universal Naming Convention (\\Share_Name\File_Name).

To configure this setting, use the Policy Editor for Word (Word10.adm) as described in the Microsoft Office XP Resource Kit, or type the setting manually in the Windows registry.

For more information about the Microsoft Office XP Resource Kit, visit the following Microsoft Web site: WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To manually configure this setting in the Windows registry, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all Microsoft Office programs.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
  4. In the left pane of Registry Editor, find and select the following registry subkey (folder):

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options

  5. While the Options subkey is selected, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type Volume and then press ENTER.
  7. While Volume is selected, click Modify on the Edit menu.
  8. In the Value Data box, type the value (according to the following chart) that you want Word to use when you work with files on a network drive, and then click OK.
