FIX: Inconsistent Results on Parallel Update That Causes Page Splits (322668)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions)
This article was previously published under Q322668 BUG #: 357197 (SHILOH_BUGS) SYMPTOMS An UPDATE statement that performs a parallel table or index
scan on the table that is being updated, and that causes page splits on the
table, may fail to update some qualifying rows. CAUSE Parallel scans do not provide proper Halloween Protection
when page splits may occur. RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, obtain the latest
service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click

Base: 290211 INF: How To Obtain the Latest SQL Server 2000 Service Pack NOTE: The following hotfix was created before the release of Microsoft
SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3. The English version of this fix
should have the following file attributes or later:
Version File name Description
-----------------------------------------------
8.00.620 Sqlservr.exe SP2-based hotfix
NOTE: Because of file dependencies, the most recent hotfix or feature
that contains the files may also contain additional
files. WORKAROUND To work around this behavior, add an "OPTION (MAXDOP 1)"
hint to the query. The fix for this issue disables parallelism for scans in an
UPDATE statement that may cause page splits; therefore, the "OPTION (MAXDOP 1)"
hint provides functionality that is equivalent to the fix. STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server
2000 Service Pack 3.
