The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q322008

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac, you may experience one or both of the following:
  • When you try to print, or to perform a copy and paste operation, Word quits unexpectedly, and then you receive the following error message:
    Unexpectedly quit, error type 1
  • Commands (on menus) are missing.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
  • A Word document is corrupted.
  • A Word Settings (9) file is corrupted.
  • A preference file is corrupted.
  • An extension file is corrupted.
NOTE: This behavior may occur during an upgrade from Mac OS 8.5 to Mac OS 8.6.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word, and then open a new document. Perform a copy and paste operation, and then print the document.

This will determine whether the issue occurs only because of a corrupted Word document, or because of a system file. If the issue still occurs in the new document, continue with the following steps.
  2. Quit Word, and then from the Finder, open the following folder:

    Hard disk:System Folder:Preferences:Microsoft

  3. Drag the Word Settings (9) file to the desktop, near the Trash.
  4. Start Word from the Office 2001 folder, and then determine whether the issue is resolved (perform a copy and paste operation, and then print the document). If the issue is not resolved, continue with the following steps.
  5. From the Finder, open the following folder:

    Hard disk:System Folder:Extensions

  6. Drag the following files from the System Folder:Extensions folder to the desktop, near the Trash.
    • Microsoft Component Library
    • Microsoft OLE Automation
    • Microsoft OLE Library
    • Microsoft Structured Storage
    • Microsoft Internet Library
  7. From the Finder, open the following folder:

    Hard disk:System Folder:Preferences

  8. Drag the following files from the System Folder:Preferences folder to the desktop, near the Trash.
    • Embedding Preferences
    • PPC Registration Data Base
  9. Start Word from the Office 2001 folder, and then determine whether the issue is resolved (perform a copy and paste operation, and then print the document).
