How to disable the background transfer of attachments to the Exchange server (319158)

In some environments, it may be necessary to prevent Microsoft Outlook from sending attachments to the Microsoft Exchange Server while you create a message. This can be done by setting the DisableBGSave registry key.

When you create a new message in Outlook and you add one or more attachments, the attachments are streamed to the Exchange Server in the background while you type the message. This occurs to minimize the time that you have to wait when you click the Send button to send the message.

You can disable this feature by using Outlook in an environment with a low bandwidth. To do this, use the following steps.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type Regedt32.exe, and then click OK.
3. For Outlook 2000, locate and then click the following key in the registry:

   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook

   For Outlook 2002, locate and then click one of the following keys in the registry:

   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook

   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook

   For Outlook 2003, locate and then click one of the following keys in the registry:

   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook

   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook.

   You will see the Policies key if policies are deployed in your environment.
4. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

   Value name: DisableBGSave
   Data type: REG_DWORD
   Radix: Hexadecimal
   Value data: 1

5. Close the Registry Editor.
