LPD Print Job Does Not Work and Generates an Event ID 4010 (318713)

SYMPTOMS

After data is transmitted and a host closes the connection, LPR/LPD print jobs that were sent from the host to a Windows 2000-based print server do not work. The following Event 4010 entry from the Line Printer Daemon Service (Lpdsvc.dll) is generated in the Event log of the Windows 2000-based computer:
Request from X.X.X.X could not be satisfied: possibly due to network problems.
NOTE: X.X.X.X is the TCP/IP address of the client computer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur because the code in Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP treat an abortive disconnection as an error that prevents any printing from continuing.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6-based LPD print server. Windows NT 4.0 acknowledges disconnections, but the print job is still completed.
