Virus Scanning API Does Not Work in SharePoint Portal Server (318627)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 SP1

This article was previously published under Q318627

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange 2000 information store exposes a virus scanning application programming interface (API). This virus scanning API is made available so that third-party virus scanning vendors can plug their virus scanning dynamic-link library (DLL) files into the virus scanning API and scan documents in the information store.

This same antivirus API functionality may not work in both SharePoint Portal Server 2001 and SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 1 (SP1). This antivirus API functionality should work in SharePoint Portal Server by using the virus scanning API that is exposed by the information store.

The configuration between the virus scanning API and third-party virus scanning DLL files (such as the sample in the Exchange 2000 Software Development Kit [SDK]) works correctly. However, basic virus scanning functionality, such as cleaning a document, may cause SharePoint Portal Server to return an internal server error.

For example, if the virus scanning DLL file returns the VIRSCAN_VIRUS_CLEANED status (which means that the DLL file found a virus, but the DLL file cleaned the document successfully), an internal server error is returned by SharePoint Portal Server.
