The SQL.Request function returns a limited data set in Excel 97 for Windows and in Excel 2000 (318562)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2000
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q318562

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Microsoft Excel ODBC add-in in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows or in Microsoft Excel 2000, the SQL.Request function to return data from an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) database may not return the whole dataset. For example, the cells that are below the data range may be filled with not available (#N/A) errors.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because there is a cell limitation of approximately 4090 cells that can be returned when you use the SQL.Request function in Excel 97 for Windows or Excel 2002 with the Excel ODBC add-in installed The more columns that you want to return data from an ODBC database, the fewer records that you can retrieve. This is a design limitation.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use MSQuery or the Query Wizard to return the full data set. You can use MSQuery or the Query wizard by clicking one of the menu items from Get External Data on the Data menu.
