Cannot Create Dial-Up Connections After You Upgrade to Windows 2000 (318183)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows 2000, your dial-up connection icons may be missing from the Network and Dial-up Connections tool. When you attempt to create a new dial-up connection, you may receive the following error message after you specify a name for the connection:
Internet Connection Wizard: 'connection name' is not a valid name. The entry name must contain at least one character that is not a space and cannot begin with a period. Choose a different name.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the Remote Access service registry keys are not created during the upgrade to Windows 2000. After this occurs, the Remote Access service cannot start, and you cannot obtain access to dial-up connections.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, complete an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000, and then reinstall the latest Windows 2000 service pack and the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. To complete an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000:
  1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Install Windows 2000.
  3. Click Upgrade to Windows 2000 (Recommended), and then follow the directions on the screen to reinstall Windows 2000.
