Error Message in Windows Messenger During an Automatic Upgrade (318151)

SYMPTOMS

If the Windows Messenger client version 5.3 or earlier tries to update itself by downloading newer client software, you may receive the following error message:
Msmsgs.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you view the data that the error report contains, the following error signature information is listed:

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, try either of the following methods:
  • Manually download the latest version of Windows Messenger from http://messenger.microsoft.com and then install it.
  • Allow Windows Messenger to upgrade in Background mode. In this mode, you are not prompted until the upgrade Setup.exe file is completely downloaded to the temporary folder.
