BUG: Visual Studio .NET stops responding when "localhost" is typed in file share path (318125)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to create a new ASP.NET Service project, and you have not installed Internet Information Server (IIS), you cannot create a new project. When you type localhost in the file share path, Visual Studio. NET stops responding without warning.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, install IIS to create localhost projects.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in Microsoft Web Services.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Verify that IIS is not installed.
  2. Start Visual Studio. NET.
  3. On the File menu, click New, and then click Project.
  4. The default for Project Types is Visual Basic Projects. Click ASP.NET Service under Templates.
  5. In the Web Access Failed dialog box, type localhost under Retry using a different file share path. Location:. Visual Studio. NET stops responding.
NOTE: Visual Studio. NET stops responding only if you type localhost. If you type anything else, the Web Access Failed dialog box reappears.
