OL2002: How to Turn Off the Security Feature That Displays the Full Address for Unresolved Recipient Names (318120)

SYMPTOMS

There is a new security feature in Outlook 2002 that displays the full address of unresolved recipient names in angle brackets (<>) in the To and Cc boxes. If you receive a large number of messages from X.400 unresolved senders, you may want to turn off (disable) this feature.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The following registry key must be applied in order for this fix to work.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Options\Mail

  3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    Value name: X400NoSpoof
    Data type: REG_DWORD
    Radix: Decimal Value data: 1

  4. Quit Registry Editor.
Note that a value of 1 turns on (enables) this processing, and a value of 0 turns off this processing.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2).
