Problems When You Try to View a Media Stream that Passes Through a NetCache C6100 Network Appliance (318006)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to view a media stream that is being hosted by a Microsoft Windows Media Services server, you may receive the following error message:

Access Violation 0xC0000005
Address: 0x78026557
Module: MPlayer2.exe

NOTE: This issue does not occur if you are running a later version of Windows Media Player, although Windows Media Player 6.4 is the latest version that is available for Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the data stream from the Windows Media Services server runs through a Network Appliance Inc. NetCache model C6100 network appliance.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact Network Appliance to inquire about the availability of an update for the NetCache appliance.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, disable all protocols except HTTP in Windows Media Player 6.4:

In Windows Media Player, click Options on the View menu.
On the Advanced tab, click Streaming Media (Windows Media), and then click Change.
Click to clear the Multicast, UDP, and TCP check boxes.
Click OK, and then click OK.

NOTE: System administrators can also work around this problem by changing the route that the Windows Media Services server uses so that the media stream does not go through the NetCache product.

Network Appliance, Inc. has confirmed that this is a problem in their NetCache appliance model C6100, OS version 5.1R2D9. This problem has been fixed in NetCache releases 5.1R2D21, 5.2.1D10, 5.2.1R1, 5.3 and later.
