FIX: Application Center 2000 Occasionally Sets Incorrect Permissions on Files When It Is Not Replicating NTFS (317811)

SYMPTOMS

Replicated files lose the access control list (ACL) if NTFS permissions replication is off; however, the replicated files have the default ACLs: Administrators and Local System have read and execute permissions). This problem occurs more frequently if the file is frequently updated on the source computer.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Application Center service pack that contains this hotfix.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Enable automatic replication and disable ACL replication.
  2. Create a test file that is referenced by IIS so that the replication engine picks it up.
  3. After it replicates, assign a new ACL.
  4. Start a process that updates the file every second.
  5. Start a full cluster synchronization (repeat this step more than once).
  6. After some time (possibly hours), the ACL of the test file is reset to the default ACL set for Application Center 2000.
