HOW TO: Restart Internet Information Services (IIS) on Exchange 2000 Server (317678)

SUMMARY

The restart feature in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 permits you to restart the Exchange 2000 Server installation of IIS without restarting the computer or manually restarting IIS. This article describes how to use the restart feature.

Restart IIS Locally or Remotely

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
2. In the IIS Management tool, right-click the container object for your server, and then click Restart IIS.
3. In the Stop/Start/Reboot dialog box, make sure that Restart Internet Services on your server is selected (in the drop-down list), and then click OK.
4. A Shutting Down dialog box appears, which prompts you that Internet services will be stopped. When this dialog box disappears, Internet-related services are automatically started again.

The Stop/Start/Reboot dialog box gives you the option to start, stop, and restart Internet services on the selected computer, and to restart the whole IIS service.

When you stop Internet services, the following services are stopped:

• IIS Admin service
• Microsoft Exchange IMAP4
• Microsoft Exchange POP3
• Microsoft Exchange routing engine
• NNTP
• World Wide Web Publishing service
• SMTP
• Microsoft Exchange information store service
• Microsoft Exchange multithreaded apartment (MTA) stacks

NOTE: After you use Internet Services Manager to stop Internet services, use the Computer Management - Services tool to verify that all services are actually stopped. In rare cases, the Exchange information store or Exchange MTA stacks may not be stopped. If this is the case, stop Internet services a second time. This stops the Microsoft Exchange information store and Microsoft Exchange MTA stacks services. When you start or restart Internet services, this starts all these services in one cycle.
