SYMPTOMS

If you try to change the installed components of a Visual Studio .NET product when the disk or disk partition on which the product is installed has less than 10 megabytes (MB) of free space, you may receive the following error message:
"A selected drive is no longer available. Please review your installation path settings before continuing with setup."

RESOLUTION

Free addition disk space.

MORE INFORMATION

For full rollback functionality, Microsoft recommends 1.9 gigabytes (GB) of free space.

Steps to reproduce behavior

  1. Install Visual Studio .NET on the C drive of a computer that has a clean installation of Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional on the C drive.
  2. Launch Visual Studio .NET and verify usability.
  3. Add junk files to the C drive or adjust the Virtual Memory File until the available free disk space is less than 10 MB.

Note You may want to make the size of the initial Virtual Memory File and the maximum Virtual Memory File the same value so that the amount of available free disk space does not vary unexpectedly.
  4. On the Start menu, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs.
  5. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, and then click Change.
  6. Click item 2, Visual Studio .NET.
  7. Click Add or remove features. Note that the C drive is not listed as an available drive for space allocation.
  8. Select a few items to install or remove, and then click Upgrade now.
