SUMMARY

The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Reinstall tool, which was released in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 (SP2), is not supported on an Exchange 2000 Server computer that runs on a cluster.

MORE INFORMATION

The Support\Tools folder on the Exchange 2000 Server SP2 CD-ROM includes the SMTP Reinstall tool (Smtpreinstall.exe). You can use this tool to repair an Exchange 2000 Server computer so that you do not have to completely reinstall Exchange 2000 if you remove the Microsoft Windows 2000 SMTP service.

To repair an Exchange 2000 Server computer, you must first reinstall the Windows 2000 SMTP service, and then run the SMTP Reinstall tool. However, you cannot use the SMTP Reinstall tool on an Exchange 2000 Server computer that runs on a cluster. If you try to run the tool on a cluster, you encounter issues that prevent you from repairing Exchange 2000 successfully. Therefore, the SMTP Reinstall tool is not supported on an Exchange 2000 Server computer that runs on a cluster.

For assistance in repairing an Exchange 2000 cluster on which the SMTP service has been removed, please contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS).

NOTE: The Exchange 2000 SP2 release notes documents the information in this article.
