SYMPTOMS

When you shut down a Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, you receive the following error message:

Pentagone Runtime error 48 Icqmapi.dll not found

Additionally, you may be unable to install any of the following programs, or these programs may stop responding.

CAUSE

The Pentagone W32.Goner.A@mm or "goner" virus can cause this behavior. The W32.Goner.A@mm is a worm that spreads itself through e-mail and through ICQ, an Internet chat program. The Icqmapi.dll file that is referenced in the error message is an ICQ file.

RESOLUTION

To verify that your computer is infected with this virus, follow these steps:

On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open text box, type regedit.
In Registry Editor, go to the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
If the registry subkey contains the following data, your system is infected with the W32.Goner.A@mm virus:
c:\%system%\gone.scr c:\%system%\gone.scr
