The Microsoft Search Service Shows High Memory Use and Performance Is Adversely Affected Over Time (316101)

SYMPTOMS

In SharePoint Portal Server 2001, the Microsoft Search service (Mssearch.exe) may show high memory use, and performance may be severely adversely affected over time.

CAUSE

By default, the Everyone group is set to a role of Reader in SharePoint Portal Server 2001. This problem may occur if the Everyone group is deleted from the Reader role, and you use a workgroup to gain access to SharePoint Portal Server 2001. If you make a subscription to a folder or document, and a document has already been published, a memory leak may occur.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.

When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
