Configuring a Windows XP Professional Client in an SBS 4.5 Network (315773)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q315773

SUMMARY

You can use the Setup Computer Wizard in Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5 to create a disk that you can use to configure a client computer in an SBS 4.5 network. However, the Computer Setup Wizard was not designed to configure Windows XP Professional-based clients. If you want to use a Windows XP Professional-based client on an SBS 4.5 network, you must manually configure any computer that is running Windows XP Professional. This article describes how to complete the following procedures on a Windows XP Professional-based computer:
  • Join the domain
  • Install Winsock Proxy Client
  • Install and configure the Shared Modem service
  • Install and configure the Shared Fax service

MORE INFORMATION

How to Join the Windows XP Professional-Based Client to the SBS 4.5 Domain

Before you join the domain, confirm that the client is connected to the server. To do so, configure the client so that it obtains an Internet Protocol (IP) address automatically by using DHCP. You can also use a static IP address.

NOTE: The client must be on the same logical subnet as the server.

To use the Ping utility to confirm that the client is connected the server:
  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type cmd.
  2. Type the following command, where ip_address is the internal IP address of an SBS 4.5-based server:

    ping ip_address

NOTE: Typically, the default internal IP address of an SBS 4.5-based server is 10.0.0.2
  3. Type exit.
After you confirm that the client is connected to the server, perform the following procedure to join the Windows XP Professional-based computer to the domain.

NOTE: If you are using the actual users logon account to perform the following procedure, confirm that the account was created on the Windows XP Professional-based client and that it is a member of the Administrators group of the Windows XP Professional-based client. Standard Windows XP Professional user accounts do not have permissions to add software or to change the system configuration on the computer unless they are members of the local Administrators group. When you add a user to the local Administrators group, the account does not have administrative rights to the SBS-based server; the account has administrative rights only to the local computer. If you make any changes to the user account rights, restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
  1. Right-click My Computer and click Properties.
  2. Click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
  3. In the Computer Name box, type the name that you want to give to the computer.

NOTE: Do not use the same name as any other computer on the network.
  4. In the Member of box, click Domain, type the name of your SBS 4.5 domain, and then click OK.
  5. When you are prompted to provide the credentials for an account on the domain that has permission to add computers to the domain, type the user name and the password of your domain administrator account, and then click OK.
  6. Restart the computer.

How to Install Winsock Proxy Client

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type the following text in the Run box, where server_name is the name of your SBS 4.5-based server, and then click OK.

    \\server_name\mspclnt

  3. Double-click Setup.exe, and then follow the instructions to install Winsock Proxy Client.
  4. Restart the computer.
