XIMS: Extended Characters Are Not Displayed Correctly in the Subject Field (314927)

SYMPTOMS

If a message from a Microsoft Mail Connector with code page 850 comes to an Exchange 2000 server by means of another Exchange 2000 server that is running the Microsoft Mail Connector, extended characters in the subject of that message may seem to be garbled.

CAUSE

Exchange 2000 receives the message with valid Transport-Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF) with code page 850. Exchange 2000 decodes TNEF, gets PR_MESSAGE_CODEPAGE (850), and then sets it correctly in the cache, but converter's code page (1252) overwrites that setting. Therefore, Exchange 2000 has an incorrect code page set to 1252 instead of 850. Because there is no valid conversion between 850 and 1252, Exchange 2000 converts the message incorrectly:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.
