SYMPTOMS

When you configure a Windows 2000 DHCP server to perform dynamic DNS registrations on behalf of Windows 2000 clients, the registration to the configured domain may not be attempted by the DHCP server. Because of this, the client host name is not registered in the desired domain. In addition, the host name that is under the client lease in the DHCP MMC will be a single label unqualified name that is equal to the client's computer name.

This symptom may occur if the following conditions exist:
  • The Windows 2000 DHCP server is performing dynamic updates on behalf of Windows 2000 clients.
  • The client is not a member of a Windows 2000 domain.
  • The client is not configured with a primary DNS suffix.
  • The domain suffix that the client is receiving is from the DHCP server through option 015.

CAUSE

The domain name that is assigned to the client is a connection-specific DNS suffix. The client does not properly negotiate option 81 for dynamic DNS registration with the DHCP Server unless the client is configured to do so.

RESOLUTION

The client must be configured to register a connection-specific DNS suffix, even though the DHCP server is registering on behalf of the Windows 2000 clients. To enable this feature:
  1. Start the Network and Dial-up Connections tool in Control Panel.
  2. Right-click the connection, and then click Properties.
  3. Click Internet Protocol, and then click Properties.
  4. Click Advanced, and then click the DNS tab.
  5. Click to select the Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registrations check box.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
