The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP1
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server SP2

This article was previously published under Q314753

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Cluster Administration utility (CluAdmin.exe) and more than 100 physical disk drives are attached to the cluster server, the Cluster Administration utility may stop responding (hang), and may then generate an access violation error message. This symptom may occur while the program is searching for the cluster signature during the physical drive initialization phase.

The following event ID message may be logged in the Event log:
Event ID: 1146
Source: ClusSvc
Description: The cluster resource monitor died unexpectedly, an attempt will be made to restart it.
The following entries may be generated in the Cluster.log:

CAUSE

The problem is caused by a limitation of 100 physical disk drives. During the scanning of the drives, when the software reached physical drive number 101, a buffer is released for the second time, and this causes damage in the heap for the process.
