SYMPTOMS

If the euro symbol is sent by means of the Internet Mail Service, the euro symbol may be displayed as a question mark (?) or the letters "EUR". The euro symbol is:

The euro symbol is converted to a question mark or the "EUR" string when the euro symbol is sent through the Internet Mail Service on Exchange Server 5.5 SP4.

If you compose an e-mail message in Microsoft Outlook 2000, and then send that message to an Internet user (by means of the Exchange Server Internet Mail Service), any euro symbol that the subject contains is converted to a question mark, and any euro symbol in the text of the bodypart is converted to the "EUR" string.

This problem does not occur with messages that are sent internally.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
