Poor performance in Office 2000 if the "Default file location" option is set to a remote share (314698)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 2000

This article was previously published under Q314698

SYMPTOMS

The first time that you click a menu command in Office 2000, you may experience a delay if the following conditions are true:
  • The Default file location option is set to a remote share that accesses a slow wide area network (WAN) connection.
  • If there is a sound effect registered.
If the Default file location option is set to a local path and there is not a sound effect registered, this problem does not occur.

CAUSE

The Winmm.dll file is a 32-bit library that supports multimedia services. The first time that you click a menu command in Office 2000, the Winmm.dll file and many sound files are loaded into memory, even if there is not a sound effect registered. This may cause a poor performance.
