This article was previously published under Q314505 SYMPTOMS When you start one of the games listed at the beginning of
this article, you receive an error message similar to the following:
STOP:FAILED (0x80070057 - WINERR_one or more arguments
are invalid) Create Sound Buffer ; DSB_CNTRL VOLUME | DSBCAPS_LOCSOFTWARE,
(PCM0-bit, 0 channel 0 CAUSE This issue occurs when codecs are damaged or missing from
your computer. Codecs are the programs that are used to decompress multimedia
information.
RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, follow these
steps: NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the
following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your
product documentation to complete these steps. Remove Default Codecs- Click Start, point to
Settings, and then click Control
Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove
Programs.
- On the Windows Setup tab, click
Multimedia, and then click
Details.
- Click to clear the Audio Compression check
box and the Video Compression check box, and then click
OK.
Reinstall Default Codecs- Click Start, point to
Settings, and then click Control
Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove
Programs.
- On the Windows Setup tab, click
Multimedia, and then click
Details.
- Click to select the Audio Compression
check box and the Video Compression check box, and then click
OK.
Microsoft Windows XPNoteThe following steps are only for Windows XP users. Enable Audio Compression Codecs- Right-click My Computer, and then click
Manage.
- In the Computer Management window, under System
Tools, click Device Manager.
- In the right pane, click the plus (+) sign
next to "Sound, video and game controllers".
- Right-click Audio codecs, and then click
Properties.
- Under Audio compression codecs,
right-click the codec, and then click Properties.
- Click to select the Use this audio codec
check box.
- Repeat for each codec that is listed.
- When you are done making sure that all codecs are enabled,
right-click Imaadp32.acm, click Properties,
and then click Settings.
- Set the option from "Compression" to "No rates", and then
click OK two times.
NoteFor Msgsm32.acm, repeat steps 8 and 9. - Restart your computer, and then test the game. If the issue
continues, reinstall Audio Codec.
How to Add Audio CodecsTo install a specific codec or MCI device:
- Click Start, and then click
Control Panel.
- To start the Add Hardware Wizard, click Add New
Hardware, and then click Next.
- Click Yes, I have already connected the
hardware, and then click Next.
- In the "Installed hardware" list scroll all the way down,
click Add a new hardware device, and then click
Next.
- Click Install the hardware that I manually select
from a list (Advanced), and then click
Next.
- In the "Common hardware types" list, click Sound,
video and game controllers, and then click
Next.
- In the Manufacturer list, click Sound, video and
game controllers, and then click Next.
- Under Manufacturer, click
(Standard system devices).
- Under Model click Audio
Codecs, click Next, and then click
Finish.
- Test the game.
If the issue continues to occur,
try to repair Windows XP by reinstalling it.
