Setup Is Not Successful When You Try to Connect to Microsoft Message Queuing Server (313696)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer to a Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) server that is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, the MSMQ Setup operation may not be successful.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the cancellation timeout for the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) connection between the Windows XP-based client computer and the Windows NT 4.0 Server computer is set to 0 (zero). This can cause the connection operation to be canceled before it is complete.

You are more likely to experience this behavior on a "slow" network.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.

This update changes the RPC timeout settings to a default setting of five minutes.

If you need to remove (uninstall) this update, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel (or point to Settings, and then click Control Panel).
Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
In the list of currently installed programs, click Windows XP Hotfix (SP1) [See Q313696 for more information], and then click Change/Remove.
Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove this update.
