The ISA Server Control Service May Not Restart Because of a Race Condition (313412)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q313412

SYMPTOMS

The Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server Control service (Isactrl) may become caught in a "race" condition with the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service during the shutdown process. This can cause obsolete RPC mappings to be used. The ISA Server Control service then does not restart.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the ISA Server Control service does not check the status of the RPC service before changing its status to "stopped."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
