SYMPTOMS

When you install an upgrade version of Microsoft Office v. X for Mac, you may receive the following message when you start one of the Office v. X programs:

Upgrade Verification

This software is an upgrade to an earlier version of the software.

To continue installation, click Browse, and then select the folder that contains the earlier version of the software (Microsoft Office 2001 folder, for example). The folder can be located on either your computer or the CD-ROM from which you originally installed the earlier version of the software.

For information about which software you can upgrade, see Installation Read Me.

CAUSE

The upgrade version of Office v. X checks your computer's hard disk for a qualifying product. If it does not find a qualifying product, you are prompted to locate a qualifying product.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you need the installation CD-ROM for the earlier version of Office that is installed on your computer. When you receive the message in the "Symptoms" section of this article, insert the CD-ROM. If the earlier version is already installed, locate one of the following folders, as appropriate for your situation.
  • If you are installing the Microsoft Office v. X for Mac Upgrade, locate one of the following folders:
    • Microsoft Office 2001

      -or-
    • Microsoft Office 98
  • If you are installing the Microsoft Office v. X Special Upgrade Offer or the Microsoft Office v. X Technology Guarantee offer, locate the following folder:

    Microsoft Office 2001

After you select the appropriate folder, click Choose. The installation should continue without error.

NOTE: Do not select the CD-ROM itself or any of the subfolders in the appropriate Microsoft Office folder. Doing this may cause Setup to fail when you confirm the upgrade status of the earlier version.
