SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Visio, the solution that you want to use may not be listed under Category in the Choose Drawing Type window or when you point to New on the File menu.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the solution is not installed on your hard disk. This can occur if any of the following conditions are true:
  • Other programs, such as virus-protection programs, were running when you installed Visio, and this prevented Setup from installing the Visio solution in question.

    -or-
  • You performed a custom installation of Visio and did not specify to install that particular solution.

    -or-
  • You performed a compact installation of Visio.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all programs that are running on your computer, including any virus-protection programs.
  2. Insert your Visio CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically.

Make sure that the Visio solution in question exists on the Visio CD-ROM. To do this, start Windows Explorer, and then browse to the following folder (where D is the letter of your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive):

    D:\Install\Bin\Program Files\Visio\Solutions

  3. Check to see if the Visio solution is installed to your hard disk. To do this, browse to the following folder (where C is the drive on which Windows is installed):

    C:\Program Files\Visio\Solutions

NOTE: This is the default installation location for the Visio solution files. If you installed Visio to a different location, the path to the Visio solution files on your hard disk is different.

  4. Run Visio Setup. To do this, double-click the Setup.exe file on your Visio CD-ROM, and then click Install Visio 2000.
  5. On the Welcome to the Visio Installation Manager page that appears, click Next.
  6. On the Setup Operation page that appears, click Add/Remove, and then click Next.
  7. On the Custom Setup page that appears, do one of the following:
    • Make sure that all Visio solutions are installed. To do this, click the + (plus sign) next to Solutions to expand the tree. Make sure that all solutions are set to the Installed locally installation state. If any solutions are displayed with a red X, the solution is not installed. To install the solution, click the arrow next to the solution, and then click Install locally. Click Next.

      -or-
    • If you want to install all Visio components to your hard disk, click Select All, and then click Next.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Start Visio, and then open the solution that you want.
