XADM: Mailboxes Do Not Replicate from Active Directory to Exchange Server 5.5 (313212)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q313212

SYMPTOMS

If you create mailbox-enabled objects in Active Directory when you have not yet installed an Exchange 2000 server in the Exchange organization, those objects may not replicate to the designated Exchange Server 5.5 computer.

If you increase logging on the Active Directory Connector (ADC), an event ID 8291 message that is similar to the following is logged in the Application event log:

Event ID: 8291
Source: MSADC
Category: Replication
Description:
The ADC cannot replicate CN=user,OU=org_unit_name,DC=domain_name,DC=com because it does not have a legacyExchangeDN for the site it belongs in. (Connection Agreement 'Connection_Agreement_name' #1288)

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Create objects in location specified by Exchange 5.5 DN check box is selected on the From Windows tab of the ADC Connection Agreement.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Connector.
  2. In the console tree, right-click Active Directory Connector Management, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the From Windows tab, and then click to clear the Create objects in location specified by Exchange 5.5 DN check box.
  4. Allow replication to occur.

MORE INFORMATION

The Create objects in location specified by Exchange 5.5 DN check box forces the ADC to search for the LegacyExchangeDN attribute of the object, and then create the mailbox object in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory based on the LegacyExchangeDN attribute. If the LegacyExchangeDN attribute does not exist, the object is skipped and the event ID 8291 message is logged in the Application event log.

If you install an Exchange 2000 server in the organization, the LegacyExchangeDN attribute is created when the ADC replicates objects from Active Directory to the Exchange Server 5.5 directory.
