Access Violation 0xc0000005 Occurs in Internet Explorer (312956)

SYMPTOMS

Internet Explorer may intermittently stop responding (hang) with access violation 0xc0000005.

CAUSE

This access violation can be caused by a problem in the Jsproxy.dll dynamic-link library (DLL). Because of the installation requirements that were set when Microsoft Windows 2000 was released, Internet Explorer cannot update this file when you install Internet Explorer in Windows 2000 (even if you have installed any service packs).

The hotfix that is described in this article allows the latest version of the Jsproxy.dll file to be installed on Windows 2000-based computers.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

MORE INFORMATION

You can install this hotfix on all versions of Internet Explorer 5.x, but you cannot install the hotfix on Internet Explorer 6.
