  • Microsoft Pocket PC 2002

This article was previously published under Q312896

SUMMARY

Many companies provide dial-up access to their networks so that remote users can log on and access network resources. Although this access is generally intended for remote desktop computer users, you can use the Pocket PC to access a network.

If you can access a company network by using standard Microsoft Windows Dial-Up Networking, you can probably connect by using a Pocket PC. Pocket PC 2002 supports Virtual Private Network (VPN) by using Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP). Many companies use PPTP to permit secure access to the company network over the Internet. VPN that uses IPsec or L2TP VPN is not supported.

Prerequisite Information

You must obtain the following information before you set up your Pocket PC to access your company network:
  • A user name and password used for dial-up networking.
  • The maximum baud rate for the connection; and settings for data bits, parity, stop bits, flow control, software compression, and IP compression.
  • The connection protocol used. The most common is the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), but the Serial Line Interface Protocol (SLIP) may also be used.
  • An IP address, if one is needed. Note that the IP address may be server-assigned.
  • The name or IP address of the Domain Name System (DNS) or Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) server, if one is needed. Sometimes, these are server-assigned.
  • The remote access phone number.
