You receive a "Visual Basic compile error in hidden module" error message when you start or quit an Office 2000 program (312595)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start or quit Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, or Microsoft Word, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Compile Error in Hidden Module: Module name
The following specific module names are displayed in the error message, depending on which program you start or quit:
  • When you quit Outlook: Module Translate.
  • When you start or quit Excel: Module mod_voice.
  • When you start Word: Module Voice.
  • When you quit Word: Module Translate.

CAUSE

This issue occurs after you install Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1). This issue can occur when you have Universal Translator 2000 installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove Universal Translator 2000 from the XLStart folder, and then delete Ut2000.dot. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. Browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart.
  3. Right-click UT2000, and then press DELETE.

    When you receive the message that asks you to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  4. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  5. In the Named box, type ut2000.dot, and then click Find Now.
  6. Press SHIFT, click each Ut2000.dot file, and then press DELETE.

    When you receive the message that asks you to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
