SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to search for a Microsoft Office file (.doc, .ppt, .xls, and so on), the Search feature does not find any matches for files with those file extensions.

This issue occurs even though the Office programs are installed and files of these types exist on your computer.

CAUSE

This issue can occur when you remove Office or upgrade from Microsoft Office 2000 to Microsoft Office XP.

When you remove Office, the extension registry keys under the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry hive may be removed. When you then reinstall Office, the registry keys are not reinstalled.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, reregister the Offfilt.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. Browse to the Windows\System32 folder.
  3. In the File name box, type:

    regsvr32 offfilt.dll

  4. Click Open.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
