MacXLX: Excel Unexpectedly Quits When You Drag or Paste a Linked Object into a Workbook (312264)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel X for Mac
This article was previously published under Q312264 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to drag or paste a linked object into a workbook, Microsoft Excel X for Mac unexpectedly quits. You receive the following error message:
The Application Microsoft Excel has unexpectedly quit.
The system and other applications have not been affected.
CAUSE
This issue occurs only when a linked object is pasted or dragged between workbooks.
A linked object is an object that is created in a source file and inserted into a destination file while a connection is maintained between the two files. The linked object in the destination file can be updated when the source file is updated.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, insert a new linked object in the new location instead of dragging or pasting the object from another worksheet.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Excel X.
- On the Insert menu, select Object.
- Click From File.
- Select the object that you want to insert, and then click to select the Link to File check box.
- Click OK.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
