The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel X for Mac

This article was previously published under Q312264

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to drag or paste a linked object into a workbook, Microsoft Excel X for Mac unexpectedly quits. You receive the following error message:
The Application Microsoft Excel has unexpectedly quit.
The system and other applications have not been affected.

CAUSE

This issue occurs only when a linked object is pasted or dragged between workbooks.

A linked object is an object that is created in a source file and inserted into a destination file while a connection is maintained between the two files. The linked object in the destination file can be updated when the source file is updated.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, insert a new linked object in the new location instead of dragging or pasting the object from another worksheet. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Excel X.
  2. On the Insert menu, select Object.
  3. Click From File.
  4. Select the object that you want to insert, and then click to select the Link to File check box.
  5. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
