  • Microsoft Word X for Mac

This article was previously published under Q312212

SYMPTOMS

When you print a document that is formatted with the Justify format, lines of text that contain footnote or endnote reference marks are not aligned correctly. Lines in the text that contain footnote or endnote reference marks may be shifted to the left or aligned unevenly along the right margin.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one or more of the following methods. Try the following methods in the order shown.

Method 1: Use Printer Metrics

To use printer metrics to lay out the document, follow these steps:
  1. On the Word menu, click Preferences.
  2. Select Compatibility, and then select the Use printer metrics to lay out document check box. Click OK, and then print the document.

Method 2: Create New Document

If you find that the first method does not resolve the issue, follow these steps:
  1. On the standard toolbar, click Show/Hide to show formatting marks.
  2. Select all of the text in the document except the final paragraph mark at the end of the document.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. Create a new document, and then click Paste on the Edit menu.
  5. On the Word menu, click Preferences.
  6. Select Compatibility, and then select the Use printer metrics to lay out document check box. Click OK, and then print the document.

Method 3: Use other forms of Justification

The issue does not occur if you change from the Justify format to left, right, or center justification. If you switch to one the other three forms of paragraph justification, the problem does not occur.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Word for Mac associates a wide variety of formatting with the last paragraph mark, especially section and style formatting. If you copy everything except the last paragraph mark to a new document, damage may be left behind in the original document.
