PRJ2000: Cannot Log On to Project Central by Using a Windows User Account (312175)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project Central, when you attempt to log on with a Microsoft Windows User Account, the "Welcome to Microsoft Project Central" screen reappears, and the Connect to server name dialog box appears repeatedly.

CAUSE

Cause 1

Directory Security in not configured correctly on the ProjectCentral virtual directory in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).

Cause 2

The Microsoft Windows NT Authenticated account is inactive in Microsoft Project Central.

RESOLUTION

Cause 1

To correct the Directory Security configuration settings for the ProjectCentral virtual directory in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), follow these steps:
  1. Open the Internet Services Manager. Expand Default Web site, expand the Project Central virtual directory, and then click Logon.
  2. In the right pane, right-click BasicAuth.asp, and then click Properties.
  3. On the File Security tab, next to Anonymous Access and Authentication Control, click Edit.
  4. In the Authentication Methods dialog box, verify the following settings:

    Anonymous Access: Disabled
    Basic Authentication: Enabled
    Integrated Windows Authentication: Disabled
  5. Click OK twice.
  6. In the Internet Services Manager, right-click the ProjectCentral virtual directory, and then click Properties.
  7. On the Directory Security tab, next to Anonymous Access and Authentication Control, click Edit.
  8. In the Authentication Methods dialog box, verify the following settings:

    Anonymous Access: Enabled
    Basic Authentication: Enabled
    Integrated Windows Authentication: Enabled
  9. Click OK twice.

    NOTE: If the Inheritance Override dialog box appears, click OK. Do not click any item in the Child Nodes list.
  10. In the Internet Services Manager, click the ProjectCentral virtual directory.
  11. In the right pane, right-click Default.asp, and then click Properties.
  12. On the File Security tab, next to Anonymous Access and Authentication Control, click Edit.
  13. In the Authentication Methods dialog box, verify the following settings:

    Anonymous Access: Disabled
    Basic Authentication: Enabled
    Integrated Windows Authentication: Enabled
  14. Click OK twice, and then quit the Internet Services Manager.
  15. In your Internet browser, start Microsoft Project Central.
You will be logged on directly to Microsoft Project Central. If you log off and attempt to log back on by clicking Log on using your Windows Authenticated account, you will be prompted for your user information. You must type the user name in the following format:

domain name\user name

NOTE: You must use the backward slash (\) character in your logon information. The forward slash (/) is invalid in this situation.

Cause 2

Activate the Windows NT Authenticated account in Microsoft Project Central by following these steps:
  1. In Microsoft Project Central, log on as Administrator or another account with the role of Administrator.
  2. On the Admin menu, click Users.
  3. On the Users page, click the inactive Windows Authenticated account, and then click Modify User.
  4. In the Account Status list, click Active, and then click Save Changes.
  5. Log off Microsoft Project Central.
