SYMPTOMS

Symantec ScriptBlocker is a Windows service that is installed automatically with Symantec Norton AntiVirus. If ScriptBlocker is enabled during the installation of Visual Studio .NET or of Visual Studio 2005, ScriptBlocker will not allow required scripts to run during installation. During the installation, the following warning message will appear:
Symantec ScriptBlocker has blocked a script action that could be harmful to your computer.
If you ignore the warning message and continue with the installation of Visual Studio .NET, the installation appears to complete successfully. However, the installation does not complete successfully.

RESOLUTION

You must disable ScriptBlocker before you install Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005. To disable this service, click the Options icon on the Norton AntiVirus toolbar. Go to the ScriptBlocker node. Expand the node, and then clear the Enable ScriptBlocker check box. (You can later reselect this option to restart the ScriptBlocker service after installation of Visual Studio .NET or of Visual Studio 2005 is complete.)

If you have already completed the installation of Visual Studio .NET and you received the warning message during the installation:
  1. Disable ScriptBlocker.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Start the Add/Remove Programs tool.
  4. Select Microsoft Visual Studio .NET.
  5. Click Change/Remove.
  6. The Visual Studio Setup dialog box will appear. Select Visual Studio .NET.
  7. Click Reinstall.
