SYMPTOMS

When you click Customize in the Microsoft Office Custom Installation Wizard, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
When you click Details, you receive the following error message:

NOTE: The memory address may be different on your computer.

Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 2000:
An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Ieak6wiz.exe Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x01019250.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you try to customize an installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 within the Office Custom Installation Wizard (CIW) by doing the following:
  1. You create a custom Windows Installer transform file (.mst) for your administrative installation of Office.
  2. In the Customize IE5 Installation Options dialog box, you choose Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.
  3. In the File name and path of Internet Explorer 5 Setup box, you specify Internet Explorer 6 (ieak6wiz.exe).
  4. You click Customize.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, install Internet Explorer 6 by using another method outside the CIW, for example, an Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) package. For more information about deploying Internet Explorer 6 by using the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) 6, browse to the following Microsoft Web site:

MORE INFORMATION

You can use the Office Custom Installation Wizard (CIW) to install and customize Internet Explorer version 5.x. However, the CIW does not work with Internet Explorer version 6. When you click Customize in the Customize IE 5 Installation Options dialog box, the CIW attempts to call the IEAK Wizard to open the IE5setup application, which does not exist.
