256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Office 2000 (French) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98 (English), the Office programs do not start.

CAUSE

During Setup of Office 2000, the Windows Installer in certain circumstances writes the operating system's locale instead of the Office programs' locale to the registry. This causes the Office programs to attempt to start from an incorrect language subfolder.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, you must modify the InstallLanguage registry key. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. In the Run box, type regedit.
  3. Select the following key:

    HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\LanguageResources

  4. Double-click the InstallLanguage value in the right window.
  5. Select Decimal and then change the current setting from 1033 to 1036, which is the French language code.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Quit the Registry Editor.
