SYMPTOMS

Microsoft has created a fix for Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2) that addresses a vulnerability that could allow malicious code to run in PowerPoint files without warning.

Under normal circumstances, you receive a warning in PowerPoint 97 when you open a document that contains macros. However, it is possible for a malicious user to modify the document in such a way that a macro can run without issuing a warning. This could cause damage to data, or allow unauthorized retrieval of data from your computer when you visit a Web site or open an e-mail message.

After you apply the fix in this article, a warning appears before any PowerPoint file that contains macros is opened.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
