This step-by-step article describes how to configure Internet Explorer 6.0 as a Web-proxy client. Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server provides security through multilayered filtering, and performance acceleration through caching of frequently-requested Web objects. ISA Server supports three types of clients: SecureNAT, Firewall and Web Proxy. A Web-proxy client sends HTTP requests directly to the ISA Server computer. As its name implies, the Web-proxy client is a Web browser, and supports only HTTP, HTTPS and FTP protocols. Configuring client computer's Web browsers to function as Web-proxy clients improves the Web performance for the internal clients.

Configure Web Proxy Clients

Unlike Firewall clients, Web-proxy clients do not require that any client software be installed. You need only configure the Web browser. Authentication information is passed by the Web browser. Firewall and SecureNAT client computers can also be Web-proxy clients if their browsers are so configured.

To Configure the Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Web Browser to Function as a Web Proxy Client

1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
2. Under Proxy server, click to select the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box.
3. In the Address box, type the IP address of the ISA Server.
4. In the Port box, type the port number that is used by the ISA Server for client connections (by default, 8080).
5. You can click to select the Bypass proxy server for local addresses check box if you do not want the ISA Server computer to be used when you connect to a computer on the local network (this may speed up performance).
6. Click OK to close the LAN Settings dialog box.
7. Click OK again to close the Internet Options dialog box.
   
   NOTE: These settings do not apply to remote access and VPN clients.

To Configure a RAS/VPN Client to Use Web Proxy Service on and Internal Network

To configure a RAS/VPN client to use the Web Proxy service on the internal network:

1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, and then click the Connections tab.
2. In the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network box, click the connection you want to configure to use the Web Proxy service.
3. Click Settings.
4. In the Settings dialog box, under Proxy server, and then click to select the Use a proxy server check box.
5. In the Address box, type the IP address of the ISA Server.
6. In the Port box, type the port number that is used by the ISA Server for client connections (by default, 8080).
7. Click OK until you have closed all of the dialog boxes.
