SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install any of the Microsoft SideWinder game-controller products listed at the beginning of this article, the installation process may stop, and then you receive the following error message:
No USB port detected, a USB port is required.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Disconnect the game controller from your computer's universal serial bus (USB) port.
  2. Insert the Microsoft Sidewinder compact disc into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Hold down the SHIFT key to prevent installation from automatically starting.
  3. On your desktop, double-click My Computer, and then browse to the following file:

    CD-ROM drive:\Setup\Setup.exe

  4. Double-click Setup.exe to start the installation process.
  5. Restart your computer when prompted.
  6. Plug the SideWinder game controller into your computer's USB port, and then allow Microsoft Windows to detect and install it.

Install the software update if the controller is the Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 controller.
  7. Restart your computer.
  8. Test your controller:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. In Control Panel, double-click Gaming Options (Game Controllers in Microsoft Windows 2000).
    3. On the Controllers tab (General tab in Windows 2000), select the correct game controller in the Game Controllers list, and then click Properties.
    4. On the Test tab, test the game-controller functions.
