Excel stops responding when you create PivotTable from a very large OLAP cube (307787)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to build a PivotTable from a very large Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) cube, Microsoft Excel may use all of the available system resources and stop responding.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when all of the following conditions are true:
  • The OLAP cube contains a calculated member.
  • The Include Hidden Items in Totals button on the PivotTable toolbar is not selected.
  • The query that you used to create the OLAP cube uses at least one NONEMPTY clause.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, select the Include Hidden Items in Totals button on the PivotTable toolbar.

To temporarily work around this problem, you can redesign the OLAP cube to use multiple hierarchies within your dimensions, instead of creating separate dimensions for each hierarchy. Doing so improves the efficiency of the query, but may not completely resolve the problem.
